Giant Cranes for Isles of Scilly

TMS Ltd have mobilised two of the largest ever cranes to visit the Isles of Scilly to assist the construction of the new Hospital and Care Home facility.

The sloping site requires a pre-cast concrete podium slab to sit modular building units on. Whilst the pre-cast concrete components are not that heavy, once this slab is built, the largest and heaviest modules will be around 24m from where the crane can sit. This requires a 120tonne telescopic crawler crane from AGD Equipment Ltd, with a 70tonne crane to load the units onto trailers in the storage compound.

As far as we know, these are the largest ever cranes to have been landed onto the island and certainly have made a spectacular site being tracked through the town to site following delivery on a landing craft.

The cranes have been in action lifting the pre-cast framework into place during October and November, with the slab starting to be installed now. The Hospital modules are planned to be lifted into position in January 2025.
